New Delhi based photographer Amit Mehra shares a few pages from his photo journal Roznaama, which documents his everyday life through images unadulterated by colour, all taken from his iPhone

a pocket sized medium of expression, the iPhone. âœThree years ago, two wonderful things happened to me: The birth of my daughter, to whom I have also dedicated Roznaama, and this smartphone. The entire book is a daily record, through which I was able to see more of my life, my relationship with my child, wife, family, friends and spaces where I have lived and grown up in,❠shares Amit. The project started in late 2012 and took three years to complete. âœI don’t see the iPhone as a mobile device; for me it is a 30 mm lens camera. It was far more practical to capture all of my child’s candid, precious moments with it. Also, the ready availability of this gadget made a huge difference to my life,❠adds he.

Though Roznaama came together without a theme in mind, his penchant for monochromatic images resulted in pictures that naturally tell a tale. âœAfter the digitisation of photography, professionals stopped visualising in black and white. I wanted to go back to the old days when we followed a certain discipline of shooting in monochrome,❠avers Amit. He believes that the pictures focusing on the subtleties of life are each unique in their own way and do not need to be described in words, which is why he didn’t want any of the images captioned; he believes these should be open to interpretation. Amit points out his favourites: âœThe one with a television covered by a bedsheet looks like a perfect art installation, almost hauntingly beautiful. It reminds me of Arnab Goswami’s famous line, but in reverse: âœThe nation doesn’t want to know anything.❠Another favourite is the one with sheer sheets falling from the top, shot at my sister’s place in Dehradun, during a family function. When the tent was unravMy blogd for pack up, the sheets looked so lyrical and poetic, falling elegantly, in deep silence.â
