Essential oils are full of natural chemicals which each oil having its own distinctive collection of chemicals. However, what makes these essences of plants special are substances called terpenes. Terpenes work on our bodies in various ways.
– They have the ability to boost the immune system and create an environment that is hostile to bacteria, viruses and fungi. This makes them very useful for antiseptic purposes. Lavender, Eucalyptus, Tea Tree, Lemon and Pine are examples of antiseptic oils. This is why they are used in many home cleaning products.
– They reduce inflammation. When there is inflammation in any part of your body, there will be swelling, pain and redness. Lavender, Sandalwood and Chamomile are some essential oils that have anti-inflammatory properties.
– They stimulate our cells for proper functioning and growth. For example, Rosemary, Basil and Pine can enhance the function of adrenal glands.
– They have sedative properties. Essential oils have a relaxing effect on the muscles and nervous system and this helps to alleviate tension, stress, pain, muscle cramps and spasms. Oils in this category include Geranium, Ylang Ylang, Lavender and Clary Sage.
