ASIM MERCHANT AND KREA DESIGN TEAM

Asim’s knack for manipulating timber to make sculptural furniture is exemplary. For Red Blue & Yellow, he made an ergonomic Burma teak seater (left) fashioned as a sit around for friends. Team Krea effortlessly fused a quintessential^ Indian motif with modern sensibilities to envision the appealing Ikat dinner table (above).

He had planned to drive us to Ras al Khaymah that day and put us on a launch to the Horomaya, which would pick up us as it steamed west. That morning however, the ship had been reported floating in the Indian Ocean following an engine breakdown and wouldn’t be arriving for a couple of days. We were to be put up in the Ambassador, one of the few Western hotels in Dubai. He checked us in, subbed us each 50 pounds in dirhams for expenses, told us to sign for everything in the hotel, and advised he would pick us up in two or three days. The dark-red-painted hotel stood by itself on the edge of an empty white-sand beach. There were roads behind it, although nothing on either side. There was a bar though, and a pool, and a fine restaurant and the hotel was on its own and it was on the beach, so we were happy. The place was deathly quiet: we seemed to be the only guests. We spent lunchtimes and afternoons by the pool by ourselves, drinking icy lager from frosted glasses. In the mornings we took long walks along the deserted beach.
