I try to get outside into the fresh air to exercise as much as possible. Whether it is a short walk around your neighbourhood, or a more dedicated drive to a location where you can do a long bush walk, getting that fresh air in your lungs and your heart rate up does wonders. Consistency is key here if you can bring an exercise routine into your week, you’ll be more likely to get out of bed and do it, and feel all the better for it. (See page 161 for more on physical wellbeing.) SIMPLIFY & DECLUTTER When I started to emerge from depression and was looking for ways to help my recovery, I decided to focus on the word ‘simplify’. (I often focus on a single word to guide my actions, and change the word and focus as needed.) I had gone through a period of gathering ‘stuff’ in an attempt to be happy, successful and content, and my job as a blogger and ‘social influencer’ also meant a lot of product got sent my way, but all it did was contribute to clutter around my home and make me feel really overwhelmed. I know many women look for happiness in shopping and accumulating things (clothes, shoes, make-up, homewares), but consumption rarely leads to meaningful satisfaction. Inspired by a documentary on minimalism, I felt motivated to do some serious spring cleaning. I started with my clothes, shoes and accessories.
