Haircare Guide For Best Black Braided Hairstyles

There are three Type 4 subtypes:

4A: Is tightly coiled hair that when stretched has an “S” pattern, much like curly hair. It tends to have more moisture than 4b and has a definite curl pattern (Celebrity Examples: Leela James, Macy Gray and Solange Knowles).

4B: Has a “Z” pattern, a less defined curl pattern. Instead of curling or coiling, the hair bends in sharp angles like the letter “Z” and has a cotton-like feel (Celebrity Examples: Esperanza Spalding, Yvette Nicole Brown and Lauren Hill)

4C: Is composed of curl patterns that will almost never clump without doing a specific hair style. It can range from fine/thin and super soft to wiry/coarse with lots of densely packed strands. 4c hair has been described as a more “challenging” version of 4b hair. Some say 4c looks identical to 4b except that the curls are so tightly kinked, there is seemingly no definition. 4c hair can shrink more than 75% of the actual hair length (Celebrity Examples: Jill Scott and Erykah Badu).

Type 4 hair needs extra moisture and “TLC” because it can be fragile. The hair should be detangled with a lot of conditioner applied using a wide tooth comb, detangling brush or your fingers. The methods used for drying the hair should be air drying (which is best) or a hooded dryer. Do not use a brush or comb on your dry curls. To reduce tangles sleep on a satin pillowcase or wrap the hair in a satin cap.
