Fine fiddlin’ from Scottish stars

Heading towards 20 years of making music, this Scottish fiddle group has featured some of that country’s finest musicians revolving round founder Bruce MacGregor, including Aidan O’Rourke (Lau) and Catriona Macdonald. The current line-up includes Rua Macmillan and Anna Massie and they, together with the other four members, have delivered a fine set of instrumental pieces that range from the spritely (Arran Ceilidh) to the slow (the beautiful Taigh Sia, composed by Angus Lyon), the fast (the delightfully named Pat The Budgie) to the all-out insane (the six tunes that make up the closing Archie).

It’s not pure fiddles all the way through, Lyon plays piano and Massie guitar as well as fiddle. But just as little excites a rock fan more than a twin guitar attack there’s something about massed fiddles that stirs the soul of a folkie. There’s a power and energy that is irresistible and the interplay between them is like nothing else. Blazin’ Fiddles deliver all this and more. South of the border the annual all-star Feast of Fiddles tour pulls in masses and it’s no exaggeration to say that this lot are easily their match. They have all the chops you could wish for and know how to use them, and equally importantly, when not to. The lack of any songs may be a drawback for some but singing is not what this lot are about. Playing is, and very fine playing too. Jeremy Searle
