Boston band Love Love

A range of styles in a unique package The music of Boston band Love Love is difficult to pigeon hole, with a range of stylistic influences including rock, country, folk and soul, which makes this self-titled debut a compelling listen. The core band members are Chris Toppin (formerly of 1990’s rock band Fuzzy), Jefferson David Riordan and Darren Ray, here supported by guests from the Boston music scene. Toppin and Riordan wrote all but the last song and share the lead vocals. Their voices carry the songs well alone but it is when they combine in harmonies they truly shine. The album is an unusual mix beginning with the dark ‘Murderpedia’ and moving through the positive ‘Big Backyard Moon’ with its soothing refrain ‘Everything is gonna be alrigh.t’ For me the highlight is the finial track – a version of the traditional song Bright Morning Star performed acoustically and recorded on Toppin’s phone. It feels like a glimpse behind the scenes of an otherwise traditional studio album. A strong debut album which is definitely a grower. Helen Thomas
