Cillian King

Self-released ………

A competent debut EP from Limerick’s latest addition to the Irish music scene

Cillian King has a background in traditional Irish music playing concertina, piano and banjo from a young age. A self-taught guitarist, he turned to song writing in 2011 and has appeared regularly as support for Limerickfolk rockers, Hermitage Green, who feature on the last of thefive tracks. Little Wine.

Cillian has recruited a group of competent musicians to assist with the project; George Mercer (bass). Tod Doyle (drums), Stephen Markham (piano) and American violin virtuoso Jeremy Kittel, with co-producer Lisa Canny chipping in with some great backing vocals.

A country rocker, My Muse, kicks things off before the tempo slows forthree really lovely ballads. To the Tide, Smile and The River, all finely crafted numbers. Things hot up again for Little Wine and Hermitage Green bring their own brand of rocking mayhem toanotherfine song. If Cillian can continue to write songs ofthis quality and is able to sustain the support of top class musicians, he could be destined for greater things. He has a distinctive and very clear voice but the impression I got was that he will always need a supporting band as his solo work tends to lack depth;

certainly one to watch though.
