Tina Turner possesses a peaceful, spiritual kind of beauty. Her features themselves are strong, but her soul is kind and soft. The tension between her inner and outer beauty is fascinating to me. Most of us are familiar with Tina made up in a strong, stagy kind of way. But for this picture, I underdid the makeup so that the inner Tina would shine through.

There was a row of bars in lower Anson Road – about ten in a line, catering to sailors. We went in. We didn’t want to disappoint. We wanted to be catered to. We put our heads in several before settling into the Champagne Bar. The Champagne Bar didn’t sell champagne, although it would sell flat Asti Spumante in its place at an extortionate price to anyone drunk or gullible enough. The typical Singapore sailor bars at that time conformed to a common standard, the Champagne Bar being no exception. They were dark with polar air-conditioning and had a juke-box, which the customers were encouraged to feed and which played the records of the day. We poured in the coins and all the sounds of the early 1970s washed over us: Edison Lighthouse’s Love Grows; Jackson Five’s I Want You Back; Norman Greenbaum’s Spirit in the Sky; Christie’s Yellow River; Mungo Jerry’s In the Summertime; All Right Now by Free; Simon & Garfunkel’s Bridge Over Troubled Water; Lee Marvin’s Wandering Star; Rolf Harris’ Two Little Boys. The bar ran along one wall, dimly lit from behind with pale green lights.
