News to us, but research has now shown a link between sunbathing and getting pregnant. ‘It’s all to do with levels of vitamin D, which is manufactured through your skin in sunlight,’ explains Dr Marilyn Glenville, author of Getting Pregnant Faster (Kyle Books; ‘Vitamin D helps balance the immune system, which is important in becoming and staying pregnant.’ Vitamin D is important for your man’s fertility, too, because reduced levels are associated with low sperm motility. Sunlight can do wonders for a number of different skin conditions, but particularly psoriasis. ‘Vitamin D can change the way cells grow,’ says nutritionist and life coach Shona Wilkinson. ‘Psoriasis sufferers tend to produce more skin cells than the average person, and vitamin D can slow down this process and cause the plaques to become less scaly and thinner.


Neuroscientist David Llewellyn-Jones assessed vitamin D levels in men and women, aged 65+, and found that cognitive function was reduced according to their vitamin D levels. Studies have also found that sunlight could help spur nerve cell growth in the hippocampus, which is responsible for storing memories.


Researchers have found that nitric oxide, which helps lower blood pressure, is released into the blood vessels as sunlight touches lower blood pressure include cutting the risk of heart attacks and strokes.
