Deep Breathing Exercises

Abdominal Breathing Exercises

1. Lie down on hard surface or floor. Inhale slowly and deeply, expanding the abdomen as you breathe in. Then exhale slowly and completely, drawing your abdomen in. Inhale and exhale through nose, with mouth closed. Relax and repeat.

2. Repeat the same exercise with each nostril separately.

Chest Breathing Exercises

1. Take position as before. While inhaling through the nose, lift up your shoulders and collar bone, filling your chest with air, but the abdomen remains largely inactive.

2. Repeat the same exercise with each nostril separately.

A variation of these exercises is to lift and stretch your arms upward and above your head when inhaling and to lower the arms when exhaling.

A modification of this exercise is to keep both arms at the sides, then raise them slowly to a horizontal position when inhaling, return them to the sides wljen exhaling.

Leg Exercises

1. Assume reclining position and relax completely. Then, without bending the knees, raise both legs slowly as high as they will reach, then slowly lower them until they touch the floor. Make sure to do this exercise slowly and in an even manner. Relax, and repeat.

2. Repeat the same exercise with each leg separately.

The following exercises are permissible when the patients strength returns; but we repeat that all exercises should be done only under careful direction.

Continue in reclined position and relax. Keeping the knees and legs straight, fully touching the floor, sit up slowly, stretching the arms and hands in front in an effort to touch the legs with the hands. Then slowly return to reclined position.

More Advanced Leg Exercises

1. Assume reclining position as in the simpler leg exercises, and relax. Then raise one leg slowly (knees straight), and when reaching the upright position, bend leg over first to the left side as far as it will reach; then to the right side as far as it will reach, then return to the center and lower leg to touch the floor again.

2. Repeat the same movements with the other leg.

3. Repeat the same movements with both legs together, turning both legs first to one side then to the other side, then bringing them back to the center and lowering them until they touch the floor.

Many other exercises can be added as the patient regains his strength, but they should be done only under careful supervision.
