Have you ever seen a screaming eagle? There was one sure way to witness the scary spectacle if you happened to play on the same team as goaltender Ed Belfour, nicknamed “Eddie the Eagle.”

Despite being ignored in the Entry Draft, Belfour went on to become one of the winningest goalies in NHL history. He always wore number 20 when it was available, to honour his childhood hero, Vladislav Tretiak, and he always had an eagle painted on the side of his mask (to honour the nickname).

Proving there is more to the man than meets the eye, Belfour is also an avid collector of fine cars and owns his own auto restoration business. He also holds a pilot’s licence.

Belfour retired in the summer of 2009 after seventeen NHL seasons and one final year playing in Sweden. Wherever he played he was consistent in one regard no one was allowed to touch his equipment. No one means no one. It was a superstition that will help get him into the Hockey Hall of Fame one day, that’s for sure.
