When you practise self-care, you’re better able to take care of others. Looking after yourself will give you more energy, allowing you to help more people and for longer you’ll be a better parent, partner, friend and colleague. Self-love, self-care, self-maintenance whatever you want to call it it is crucial that you fill your own cup. If you don not make it a priority, then you’re running around on an empty tank, which could mean you’re not much use to anyone yourself or others. In fact, if you’re so focused on others’ needs that you don not take time to refuel, the very people you are trying to help may end up having to help you instead. Or you may start to resent the fact that you are helping others on an empty tank, which can damage your relationships. Whenever you are tempted to think that self-love is selfish, remember that treating yourself with love and compassion puts you in a much better position to show love and compassion to others. If you are happy and content with who you are, you are less likely to judge others unfairly; less likely to jump to assumptions or rely on unhelpful stereotypes; and more likely to get to know someone from a place of open-mindedness and empathy. If everyone practised self-love and compassion, I believe the world would be a more harmonious, peaceful place. I guess the ultimate in self-care is doing something like a weekend retreat they’re a great way to unwind.
