Good Future Solutions for Your Tense Skin

STEP 1: CALM YOUR CLEANSE

If you’re a fan of a gel or foam cleanser, consider switching to an oil and cloth combo instead. It’s just as effective but won’t leave your skin feeling stripped – and will help it adjust to the colder, drier weather by retaining its natural oils. Massage your cleanser onto your face, then wipe it off with a damp muslin cloth or clean facecloth. TRY Vichy Pureté Thermale Cleansing Micellar Oil, R275; Elizabeth Arden Ceramide Replenishing Cleansing Oil, R535; Optiphi Muslin Cloth, R197

STEP 2: SWAP YOUR MOISTURISER

The light dose of hydration you used in summer isn’t going to cut it when the big chill sets in. If you’ve been using a lotion, switch to a cream – the ingredients that make creams thicker also form a barrier that traps moisture in the skin. Avoid highly fragranced ones as your skin will be more sensitive to them in the winter. TRY Sorbet Hydro Skin SPF 15 Day Cream, R155; Gatineau Paris Nutriactive Mediation Rich Cream, R655; SkinPhD Moisture Maintenance, R375

STEP 3: ADD A RICH SERUM

When the mercury falls, a few drops of serum mixed into your moisturiser – or massaged on beforehand – makes all the difference to dull skin. Look out for hyaluronic acid on the label – it’s instrumental in helping your skin hold onto moisture for a more youthful appearance. TRY Afriderm Facial-intensive Serum Concentrate, R169,95; Bioderma Hydrabio Sérum, R329,95 Comeback Facial Serum, R695

STEP 5: STOCK UP ON SOOTHERS

Tasking balms that soften dry lips, moisturise and calm skin down all at once – saving you money too. Bonus! TRY La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Baume B5; R200; Dr. Pawpaw Original Balm, R95; Soil Ugandan Shea Butter, R113

STEP 6: UP YOUR EYE GAME

We know winter weather dehydrates skin, so if the sensitive area around the eyes feels a bit crêpey, use an eye cream with a rich, moisturising formula that packs a plumping punch and then some. TRY TheraVine Anti-Wrinkle Eye-Serum, R335; Nivea Q10 Plus Anti-Wrinkle Eye Cream, R169,99; The Body Shop Oils Of Life Intensely Revitalising Eye Cream-Gel, R200

STEP 4: EAT RIGHT

Take a two-pronged approach to skincare in winter – the goodness you put into your body will ultimately show on the outside. To avoid dehydration, keep your water intake high – we’re talking two litres a day. And eat your water – skincare expert Dr Howard Murad says tucking into water-rich foods like cucumber will help no end. Avo.
