Since making this a priority, I feel more alive, clear-headed, vibrant, productive and confident. Of course, I still have my bad days, but I try really hard to get back to a more positive way of thinking whenever I feel negative thoughts start to creep in. DEVELOP STRATEGIES Make sure that you have strategies in place to help you get back to a place of well-being. The Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand has developed a resource called ‘Five Ways to Wellbeing’, which is a set of simple, evidence-based actions that are said to improve well-being and mental makeup. In short, the actions are: Be active. Do what you can, enjoy what you do and ‘move your mood’, because research shows a strong connection between physical activity and not just physical but also mental well-being; it can increase self-belief and resilience and encourages social interactions, too. Keep learning. Embrace new experiences, look for opportunities and surprise yourself, because learning something new can increase self-esteem and encourage social interaction and goal-setting. Take notice. Appreciate the little things and savour the moment, as learning to live mindfully in the present (rather than anguishing over the past or future) and practising gratitude can help you to recognise and modify unhelpful thinking patterns and behaviours, leading to improved well-being.
