Stiff neck? Put down your smartphone. According a study in The Spine Journal, surgeons are seeing more patients with symptoms related to smartphone use.
Your head weighs around 5kg, but when you’re leaning forwards to text, the force can increase to the equivalent of almost 27kg, leading to ‘tech neck’ complaints such as chronic headaches, severe neck and shoulder pain and blurred vision.
Co-author of the study, Dr Todd Lanman advises holding mobiles in front of your face at eye level while texting and using both hands to create a more symmetrical position in your spine. Checking your ears are over your shoulders and shoulders over your hips will also help. So go on, give your neck a little TLC.
