Knowing that socialization was what I craved, they began popping by the house more often, for which I was grateful. It’s important our support team is aware of the emotional support we need. It can be hard to let them see beyond the mask, but now, more than ever, you need people to keep an eye on your emotional and mental health. This is an area I found lacking in obstetric care. Your medical team monitors your blood sugar, blood pressure, baby’s heartbeat, baby’s positioning and more, but often the emotional state and mental health of mothers is overlooked. Too few medical providers take the time to talk with moms about the ups and downs of pregnancy and really find out how the mother is doing. Since no questions are asked, most women are reluctant to talk about their emotional struggles or feelings of depression, causing further feelings of isolation. It can become a vicious cycle with stress, depression, and anxiety causing pregnancy complications for both the mother and the baby. This is why it’s so important to add the conversation about your mental health to your regular medical visits. After you’ve answered all the questions about your physical health, give your medical provider an update on how you are feeling, revisiting this throughout your pregnancy.
