I did have a glass at dinner that night and noticed I woke up with a sore neck and a heavy, foggy head the next day. Even with that small amount of alcohol the impact on my body was obvious. I felt a lot slower. My time not drinking was a game-changer and a huge learning journey. I had always relied on alcohol to relax in social situations, and going without taught me that I could have a good time without it. I think it is so ingrained in New Zealand culture that socialising and booze go hand in hand that most people wouldn not think of having a night out without it, let alone go to a wedding or other big event sober. I’m still playing around with what part alcohol should play in my life. I can say with certainty that my life is better when it does not involve a lot of alcohol every day, but I like to think I can make a place for the occasional pinot noir, champagne or espresso martini! Since making my declaration of self-love, I have been following a very different path from the one I was previously on. I think that as we approach a new decade, we tend to re-evaluate where we are in life and what is important to us, and I know this has been true for me as I approach forty.
