I Does rheumatoid arthritis have any impact on fertility or pregnancy?

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA), another one of the autoimmune conditions, does impact on fertility in that it may increase the risk of miscarriage through the production of autoantibodies such as antiphospholipid antibodies (APAs), which sometimes attack the body’s own tissues. RA occurs in around 1 in every 1,500 pregnancies, and as with other autoimmune disorders, pregnancy improves the condition for many women, though they often relapse a few months after giving birth. A specialist will determine which drugs are safe to use for treatment of RA during pregnancy.

They put our generation to shame. In their younger years, Mum played basketball and did athletics, and Dad was a surfer and rugby player (not to mention in a band with Midge Marsden for a while). They encouraged us to try whatever sport we wanted badminton, surfing, tennis, netball, softball you name it, we tried it. We had a three-wheeler motorbike which we rode through the empty section next door, knew all the neighbours on our road, and would spend long days roaming the streets on our bikes and playing cricket and spotlight with the neighbourhood kids, until our mums called us in for dinner and a bath. I was always pretty confident on that three-wheeler but one day, when I was eight, that confidence back-fired on me. I put on Dad is gumboots as I left the house to go and play on the bike with the other kids. The boots were, of course, far too big for me, and as I was riding one boot got caught under the bike, jamming my leg and inner thigh against the exhaust, which burnt my leg. I remember Dad sprinting over to grab me I was screaming my head off and he carried me home, where Mum got me straight into the shower with all my clothes on to get cold water onto the burn. It left me with a lifelong scar, one I was very conscious of growing up. IN DAD’S WORDS Makaia was a happy, smiley baby, who right from the start settled in to life around the Rowland household.
