If we love and accept ourselves, good choices start to come naturally. This means you’ll be more likely to get out for a walk rather than stay sitting on the couch or in bed, you’ll choose to spend time with people who make you feel good about yourself rather than people who make you feel inadequate, and you’ll choose to fuel your body and mind with nourishing food rather than heavy fried food or alcohol. Loving yourself is a positive cycle the more you love yourself and look after yourself, the better you will feel; much preferable to the opposite of self-loathing and self-destructive behaviour. (See page 95 for more on self-love and compassion.) When I was deep in the fog of depression, many people shared their experience of how their dog helped them. I wasn not convinced at first dog ownership sounded like hard work and I felt I was barely managing to look after myself and my kids, without throwing another family member in the mix. As a child, my family had always had pets but my adult life hadn not really had a place for them. Eventually I was persuaded though, and since adopting a lovely retired racing greyhound called Phoebe I can see why so many people suggested it! Owning a dog as an adult has opened me up to a whole new world I can honestly say she has changed my life and had a positive impact on the whole family. Just having her as my constant companion and knowing that she needs me to help her get through her day gets me right out of my own head and into what is needed to care for someone else (it is funny that as kids grow up and become more independent, that feeling partly goes). Not only does she get me out of bed in the morning to get her outside for toileting, she requires walking every day, outside in the fresh air.
