Amla or Indian Gooseberry is one of the many wondrous herbs of India derived from the tree native to that country. Described as one the better sources for vitamin C (ascorbic acid), the herb itself has been linked to many anti-aging properties related to the skin and hair. Consumed orally the herb has been documented to lower cholesterol and increase red blood cell counts.
The active ingredient that has significant pharmacological action is designated as phyllemblin. Other ingredients present are gallic acid, tannins, pectin, amino acids, copper, superoxide dismutase, linolenic acid, and zinc.
For years the extracts of this plant have been used in hair tonics that claim to rejuvenate hair growth and return the pigmentation of the hair to its original state. The reasoning behind this is that the herb may prevent rancid lipid peroxidation of the scalp, increase the anti-inflammatory response, or its cholesterol lowering capabilities may counteract DHT formation. Used as a hair rinse it is purported to be one of the better hair conditioners to be found. Some people have gone as far as to label Amla as a “natural minoxidil” but more research is needed before this euphemism can be properly applied.
