Warning: If possible, smell the product before buying it some selftanners have an unpleasant odor.
On extremely dry areas of the body (elbows, heels, knees), self-tanning lotions can leave a deep orange stain. To avoid, exfoliate these areas in the shower in the days before application. Apply self-tanner to these dry zones only sparingly.
Be sure to wash your hands thoroughly once you are finished with selftanning application, scrubbing the areas between your fingers and the palms of your hands especially carefully. Since self-tanners can stain clothing and sheets, allow enough time for the lotion to be fully absorbed before putting on a white blouse or crawling into bed.
Question: How can I be sure I am purchasing a self-tanner that will work for me? Problem: It’s not easy. If you are very fair, it may be impossible to find a product that does not turn your skin orange. Otherwise, shop the selftanner lines that have a choice of shade (light, medium, dark). If you are between two shades, opt for the lighter one. Feel a product’s consistency to make sure that it will rub in easily.
