MAKEUP FOR BEGINNERS

Autumn: This is a time to do grown-up makeup with foundation, concealer, and powder. I always think of fall as back-to-school, i.e., time to get serious. Make an appointment at a makeup counter to try new techniques or richer lip colors, such as burgundy or plum. It is also a good idea to invest in a new foundation (given the change in season and hence a change in skin tone) and to explore using bronzing powder to extend your summer color.

Now is the time to pull together your look. Clean out your closet and shop for a few key clothing and accessory items. Think about getting a new haircut.

The Holidays: This is the season to play with sparkle and shimmer in makeup. Or do a glossier mouth, say, or try a slightly reflective eye shadow.

Note: Avoid doing more than one shimmer spot on the face do lip or eye and do not put on cheeks or shoulders.
