The company superintendent flew in; he stayed in the ship’s hospital. Although the super spent most of his time in the engine room looking at the damaged bearings, we toured the decks with him for half a day while he inspected all parts. He was an old school ex-master who treated us like serfs, snapping his fingers and barking commands; even LJ seemed faintly embarrassed at his imperiousness. We plotted a minor accident – although the opportunity never arose. Once the ship was certified clean and safe to dockyard standards, we were towed into Keppel. The Vexilla was manoeuvred and carefully housed in the floating dock. Swarms of workers poured onboard to rebuild the broken engine parts, shore power was connected, and we were all moved off to stay in Connell House, the seaman’s mission in Anson Road, while the ship’s electrics, sanitation and air-conditioning were also taken apart. The air-conditioning was an afterthought to the ship and had been progressively added over the years. Our cabins enjoyed an almost un-noticeable trickle of coolish air through the vent – it was cooler to keep our portholes open, when weather allowed. Our working day during the dock period called for us to arrive at the ship by 08.
