We shouted and jeered at poor films and often threw things at the screen, empty beer cans and cigarette packets and anything else that came to hand. Every 40 minutes or so, the reel would end and flap wildly around the projector arm until the machine was switched off and the new reel threaded. This signalled a general mobilisation for the bar and toilets. Minor disasters were a function of film nights. The film would break or jam and burn; the projector bulb would blow; the reel would come off if it hadn’t been clipped on properly and it would bowl around the room, scattering film everywhere; the screen would fall down. It was common to end up with the soundtrack a couple of seconds out of synch with the image, which was maddening – we would shake the projector and beat the speaker in our frustration. The unforgivable crime was to get the reels mixed up. They were commonly in the wrong cardboard sleeves, with reel three being in the sleeve marked ‘reel two’. The people in the first showing often mixed them up deliberately to assassinate the enjoyment of the second showing. The film would usually start properly with the right reel; we could always tell because it had the credits in the early part.
