NEW MOM? HERE’S VANESSA’S ADVICE ON FEELING LIKE YOURSELF AGAIN

GET SOME AIR

The first few months after having a baby can be tough and a lot of women start to feel overwhelmed. My advice is to find something that gets you out of the house for a few hours. For me, finding peace is about being outside in nature, but that’s not always easy when you have a newborn – you can’t just leave them with someone! My best baby buy has been my running pram. If at any stage I feel cabin fever setting in, I pop Max in the pram and we head out together.

MAKE TIME FOR YOU

This is something I wish I did more of in the months after I had Max, because it’s so important. If you’ve got a membership at a gym with childcare, take advantage of this luxury. You don’t even have to do a workout, just go have a coffee and sit by yourself in the café.

LEARN TO LET GO

I’ve always been a relaxed person and I’m learning how important this quality is for moms. For those first few months, you’ll sterilise everything while your baby is building their immune system, but babies are more resilient than we give them credit for. I’ve given into the fact that Max will drop his dummy on the floor every five minutes, and it’s OK not to wash it everytime he does.

REMEMBER YOUR RELATIONSHIP

Don’t forget that you and your partner embarked on this journey together. Having a child can be tough on any marriage, so don’t neglect your relationship. As much as it can be about you and baby, your husband might also need a little reminder that he’s still wanted. It can be something as simple as a neck rub every so often.
