Nomuzi Mabena’s status as South Africa’s Skhanda Queen couldn’t be more fitting. Not only because she has fast become the female face of the genre, but because she’s building herself an empire. And like many great queens, she’s been ruling from a young age. At 16, Moozlie was already commanding crowds as the MC of various big events in Jo’burg.

But it was in 2012, when she won the MTV Base VJ Search, that people really sat up and took notice. Her charisma even caught the attention of record label Cashtime Life, and it wasn’t long before she’d reinvented herself as the country’s fiercest female rapper. But Moozlie thrives on independence and so, soon after landing a gig as a Vuzu presenter, she launched her own label.
‘I want to redesign the music industry, and I knew I couldn’t do that under someone else,’ she says. In the name of driving growth, the hip-hop powerhouse has recently signed on with new mobile streaming app JOOX, which aims to make local music easily accessible. ‘Th e app is blowing up,’ she says. ‘It’s great because it gives artists the freedom to be in control of the music they produce and how it’s put out into the world.’ Spoken like a true queen.
