Food provides nourishment through intestinal absorption and metabolic processes within each cell. Certain foods, in addition to their nutrient content, can be beneficial when applied to the skin. Apples contain a compound called malic acid that is a natural moisturiser. The lactic acid in sour milk, the citric acid in oranges, and the glycolic acid from sugar cane are also natural moisturisers. Ingredients in lemon might bleach and lighten skin colour. Vitamins, minerals, and proteins, however, are too large to be absorbed through the tiny pores of the skin or hair and topical application with food cannot be expected to nourish the body.
