The bosun was a good seaman but not really tough enough to run a white crew of a deep-sea ship where everyone was away from home for at least nine months. The chief mate looked a hard man, but in truth he just wanted a quite life and he let the ship run on a casual basis. Between the chief mate and the bosun they let things slide, which suited the crew because they could then work at an easier pace. There was no real trouble as such and no need for Jimmy and me to ‘watch our step’. There was just a lot frustration for the chief mate, who couldn’t get things done as he wanted – but that’s what happens if you let things slide. White crew or Chinese crew? This was an on-going debate among officers aboard ship. The Horamaya had a white crew. A lot of the officers preferred Chinese crews because they didn’t give as much trouble, generally speaking. Others thought there was nothing better than a true-blue British crew, because they could be relied upon more when the chips were down. At that stage of my life I didn’t have a preference; I was happy with either crewing system; they were just different.
