FAMILY GUY Ryan has said the one quality he wants in a partner is “that she’s Eva Mendes. There’s nothing else I’m looking for.â^ He gave hisgirls (dressed for Halloween) a shout-out on Saturday Night Live: “Eva and Ezzy, I love you!â

Ryan Gosling is unequivocally a ladies’ man. After playing a sensitive country boy in The Notebook and flashing his abs in Crazy, Stupid, Love, the 35-year-old actor has built up a loyal female fan base. But his latest role, in Adam McKay’s The Big Short, is sure to appeal to the fellas too. In the dramedy, based on Michael Lewis’ nonfiction best-seller, Ryan narrates the action, playing a Wall Street banker who spots the impending collapse of the housing market and comes up with an ingenious way to cash in beforehand. Here, he talks finance and the joys of building a family with Eva Mendes,
41, and their 15-month-old daughter, Esmeralda.
How important is it for you to work with people you like?
It’s very important And to be a part of something you really enjoy working on makes it even more exciting. But I learned a lot [about the crisis] from the script and then, obviously, through Michael’s book and the research process. I am still learning about it
Are you into numbers? Do you sometimes read The Wall Street Journal and follow investments?
I am okay with numbers, and I do read The Wall Street Journal at times. But I don’t really care too much about my investments. That’s what financial advisors are for.
The housing bubble was obviously a very serious matter. A lot of people lost their homes. Yet the movie manages to focus on some lighter moments as well.
Adam has a way of maintaining his sense of humor about something that’s very upsetting, and I think that’s unique. I do believe it’s important to be able to see the humor in it all. Life will eat you up otherwise.
THE MAKING OF A HEARTTHROB
I’M VERY PROTECTIVE OF MY PARTNER AND MY BABYâ
THE MICKEY MOUSE CLUB Ryan (front left) was on the Disney show from 1993 to 1995. âœI was fully invested,â he says of the gig.
Is it true you imitated Marlon Brando’s voice when you were young because you felt yours wasn’t tough enough?
Well, I did play around with different voices. The reason was that I fell in love with acting at a very young age, and it was just my way to escape into this world. I loved cinema so much.
You lived with your mother after your parents were divorced. How has that influenced your behavior with women?
I love my mother. Always will.
She’s been a great and very positive influence in my life. I was always very protective of her, and I think that carried over into my adult life. Today, I’m very protective of my partner and my baby as well.
Speaking of baby Esmeralda, how has fatherhood been treating you?
It’s the most amazing thing in the world. I’ve never slept less and been more happy than I am today. Being a father changed my life for the better, no question about it.
