She also needs constant attention (lots of hugs and pats), and in turn gives me constant attention. Dog ownership encourages you to do the simple things that often seem just too hard when you’re depressed. A dog requires care, making you feel needed when you might be feeling worthless, and also offers you unconditional love. Of course, if a dog is really not for you, a cat would also give you many of these things, but doesn not require the same commitment to exercise. Pet ownership is a personal choice as well as a big responsibility, so may not be for everyone, but I can not recommend it highly enough! A less demanding commitment is to get some indoor plants for your home or your work beauty space. Yes, you heard right caring for plants can help your mental makeup. Knowing that this beautiful plant that you have invested money and beauty space in will die if you don not look after it, won not grow if you don not feed it, and won not live a long life of beauty if you don not love it, can be enough to help keep you focused and present in that day, on what is required or needed of you to care for it, rather than worrying about things in the past or the future. The simple task of watering a plant, checking on its leaves, showing it care by being aware of the amount of light it is getting and researching the best way to care for it has been proven to actually improve your mental makeup and well-being. I find myself smiling while checking on my plants, picking up fallen leaves and giving them water it is a blissful, meditative task. The bonus of having greenery inside is that plants also help to improve the air quality.
