‘I wanted to play a role in making the lives of working moms easier’
JANICE WINDT, 36, LIVES IN SUNNINGHILL WITH HER HUSBAND, HEINZ, AND THEIR CHILDREN: SAMUEL, 5, AND JONATHAN, 3. SHE IS THE FOUNDER OF THE UPCOMING WORKING MOTHERS EXPO
When I worked at an investment bank, I found balancing my career and home life a significant challenge. At work, I worried I wasn’t giving my children the attention they deserved and, when I arrived home after a jam-packed day in the office, my head was still spinning with all my work responsibilities – I had nothing left to give my family. I started talking to other moms and found I wasn’t alone: so many of us were struggling and looking for some kind of help. To make our lives a little bit easier, I decided to do something about it. I began by identifying what working mothers find difficult to fit in around their jobs, and imagined what it would be like to have services that help busy moms showcased in one convenient space. And that’s where the idea for The Working Mothers Expo came from.

Whether moms are looking for au pairs, drivers, home-cooked meals delivered to their door, or flexible work opportunities to create more time with their kids, there is help available. The Working Mothers Expo brings everything working mothers need together under one roof. The shift from navigating a corporate career to running your own business is a major one, and it wasn’t easy, especially with two young boys running around my home office. Luckily, many of my business associates are also parents, so they understand when one of my boys is vying for my attention as we try to have a serious work discussion. The most significant challenge that we’ve faced was introducing a brand-new concept to people who have never been exposed to something like this. We’ve had to be very sure that our idea would succeed in order to convince others.
That wouldn’t have been possible if it wasn’t for the passion we have to serve working mothers in South Africa and worldwide. My husband and family have been really supportive, and I’m thrilled to have found a way to pursue my passion of helping other working moms, while still being able to spend quality time with my own children. Next month I’ll be holding the first-ever Working Mothers Expo in partnership with MiWayLife, and I cannot wait to see how mothers respond to it.
