Aromatherapy is the usage of various oils to enhance the well-being of the individual. Each of the essential oils has its own character and can be used by itself or blended with other oils to obtain the desired effect. These oils can be used to help a wide variety of ailments both physical and emotional as well as those that are stress related.

For years practitioners of aromatherapy have claimed that the oils were very beneficial in treating hair loss and growing hair. This has largely been anecdotal until a recent British study validated quite a few of these claims. This double blind clinical study concluded that when various essentials oils were employed nearly half of the patients showed marked improvement in their hair loss situations. Eighty-four patients were involved in the study. The oils used were thyme, lavender, rosemary, and cedarwood. The carrier oils utilized were grape seed and jojoba oils. Carrier oils are used to dilute the essential oils for massage into the scalp. Without them many of the essential oils would be far too strong to apply directly to the skin. Typical concentrations are one drop of the essential oil per 5ml of the carrier oil. Clary, sage, and Ylang are some other recommended essential oils for hair loss.

Avocado oil is one of the few natural botanicals that have a tiny enough molecular mass to be absorbed deeply into the skin and hair follicle. This being so allows it to mimic sebum which keeps the hair shaft soft and subtle while at the same time increasing its flexibility. Based upon this it is no small wonder why this oil is a prized ingredient in many better hair loss and skin care products. Plus it becomes even better because various vitamins found in the avocado are able to piggyback their anti-oxidant and anti-bacterial properties straight into the skin. These being such things as vitamin A,B,C,D,E, plus lecithin which aid in retarding the aging process. Bottom line since it is an oil though its benefits for hair loss likely come from the fatty acids, vitamin E, lutein, the phytosterol content (in particular beta sterol), and carotenoids.

One ingredient that everybody seems to be making a mad rush for is Azelaic acid. This substance is a naturally occurring saturated dicaroxylic acid extracted from barley, wheat, and rye. It has been around for quite a few years as a treatment for acne and other skin conditions. According to French studies it is a very potent DHT inhibitor and even more potent when combined with zinc and vitamin B-6. Unlike Retonic Acid, which has its greatest value when combined with minoxidil, this acid’s benefits can be derived without the latter. Research indicates it is effective on the frontal hairline. Azelaic Acid is manufactured by Schering Pharmaceuticals under the name Skinoren. It is a prescription drug. Used in moderation, on the frontal hair-line, a $22 tube can last about three months.
