Roseberry Records …………

Beautiful harmonies; one for the discerning folkie Skylark Song is an acoustic duo beginning to make waves in the North East. MAY THE HUNTER RETREAT is their second release and is a masterful follow-up to the critically acclaimed RELENT. Alex and Emma McRae are anxious that their music should not be pigeon-holed as folk but that is just what it is. It’s both atmospheric and

haunting with lyrics that are contemplative and expertly crafted. They draw their influences largely from the environment and the music is perfectly suited to Alex’s intricate finger picking guitar work.

The standout track for me was Hunter with Alex taking lead vocals supported by Emma on violin. There are however, many highlights and I felt the duo were at their best when duetting. Only A Thought and If I Close My Eyes veer closer to the first album whereas Where I Hide, Keep Wide Awake and the flamenco-tinged Wounded represent something of a shift in musical direction. The couple clearly enjoy playing the festival circuit which is probably where their music is most suited. They launched the album at one of Newcastle’s premier acoustic venues, The Cluny 2.
