The mother of herbs” grows robustly along roadsides and is said to protect the traveller It is best described as a tonic with particular application to the digestive and nervous systems; it reduces nervous indigestion, nausea and irritability. As a womb tonic it helps regulate the menstrual cycle, reduces any associated period pain and PMS. It is also used to repel insects, including moths.
Parts used: Flowers and leaves.
Dose: 14-A tsp three times a day. caution: Avoid in pregnancy.
LADY’S MANTLE
Alchemilla xanthochlora syn. A. vulgaris,Virgin’s Cape
The unusual leaves of this plant resemble a cloak, hence its common names. The name Alchemilla derives from the Arabic word for alchemy, signifying its power to help make a change. A larger species, Alchemilla mollis, is grown as a foliage plant. Lady’s Mantle is a women’s herb and helps balance menstrual cycles. As a douche or wash, an infusion helps sooth any itching or inflammation.
Parts used: Leaves and flowers.
Dose: 1 tsp dried/2 tsp fresh to a cup of boiling water three times a day.
