How would you describe your design philosophy? I see myself as a tailor who designs bespoke interiors. For this reason, I like to explore and use all the tools possible to realise each project. I never limit myself—I like to push the boundaries of design.

What are your sources of inspiration?
My inspiration for any project comes from the location itself. I spend time experiencing the place to understand the natural fl ow of the interior space and the play of natural light within it. Then I start to collect the perfect palette of materials. My relationship with a project is not only about what we see, but what we feel as well; I never forget the other senses.
In your opinion, what are the essential qualities that defi ne French design?
The richness of French design history is made by several different layers of style, in a constant evolution. It’s always evolving and always on the edge—the French have a real talent to be unsatisfi ed with what they have.
Could you share more about your recent work for the Hôtel de Crillon in Paris?
I designed the Hôtel de Crillon as a place you’ll enjoy returning to, where the pleasure comes in discovering new details with each visit. Everything was tailor-made for the hotel—I designed as many as 120 furniture pieces and used 330 different materials in 28 areas.
What, in your opinion, are details that make a house a home?
A house is a shelter—one must feel good at home instantly, without any constraints. To achieve this, I would enhance the sense of safety, sensuality and comfort with soft textures. Tell us more about the scenography you’ve designed for the Maison&Objet fair. I’ve created a space that explains my creative process and sources of inspiration. I’ll launch my new business as well—as a cabinet-maker for classic cars, called Tristan Auer/Cartailoring; I’ll show my fi rst car interior.
