They were known as ‘ki-ti’: men with various degrees of treatment and surgery to halfturn themselves into women. They took hormones and had breast enhancements and this, along with the fact that Asian men are generally more slender, smoother-skinned and less hairy than Europeans, made them extremely convincing women – particularly when most of their audience was drunk, when it was night, and when they were made up and bewigged and dressed to the nines. They all prostituted themselves shamelessly. Stories were rife of soldiers and sailors going off with a ki-ti, convinced that he/she was in fact a woman, to encounter a fright later on when the clothes came off. It was even worse when someone woke up in the morning lying next to one and had to address the reality. The crowd went wild as the ki-tis made their way through, sitting on peoples laps, drinking their drinks, eating their food, coercing and inveigling and tempting the easily-led into coming back with them. At 2.00 a.m., the fights started.
